Summary
K9 units can greatly add to the effectiveness of a department's crime fighting initiatives, but there are several aspects of K9 use which may affect liability exposure. To limit liability, a department should consider expanding and documenting its K9 training, reviewing and updating K9 policy and considering new approaches to the inevitable bite complaints.
