Below are listed three weapons potentially harmful to arresting officers. This information was copied with permission from editions of the Homeland Security Report, compiled by Anthony M. Davis.
![]() This week's Officer Safety item is a key chain with a knife blade. This type of knife is referred to as a, "Lagriffe" and is designed to allow a solid grip when in use. The overall size is 3 3/4 inches in length; the blade is 1 1/2 -inches in length.
The key chain comes with a leather sheath that protects the user from the blade. This could easily be tucked into a pocket or behind a belt, exposing only the keys. Once a suspect has a firm grip on this knife, manually disarming becomes more difficult. Other use of force options may be required. Law Enforcement and Security Professionals should be mindful of items such as these dangerous cutting weapons.
Kerambit
![]() This week's Officer Safety item is a double-edged weapon called a Kerambit. It is designed to fit snugly into the hand for close fighting. This particular model is 7-inches in length with two 3-1/4" blades. It has a flat construction of only 1/4" thickness. This dangerous cutting weapon is sold on the Internet. Law Enforcement and Security Professionals should be cautious when searching suspects as this item could easily be concealed.
Knife with Extending Blade
![]() This week's Officer Safety item is a switchblade type knife housed in a plastic body. The knife has a plastic lever, which can be used to flip the knife blade into the extended position and lock in place. Law Enforcement and Security Professionals should be mindful of such items when dealing with suspects.
