Summary:
This article traces the history of law enforcement radio systems, the problems associated with the employment of disparate systems, and the quest for a common communication protocol (interoperability). The article offers solutions for current as well as future law enforcement radio system problems, and should be a “must read” for police administrators.
Major R. D. Stuart is a 16+ year veteran of the Montgomery Police Department and currently serves as the Division Commander of the Records & Communications Division. He also serves as the project manager for the Communications Improvement Project, a $20 million City project to enhance public safety communications and consolidate police and fire dispatch.
